All around the world there are many diamonds that have been spoken about and even written about in various stories and official records. Famous diamonds are part of our world's historical past, and have been identified in numerous parts of the world, by all types of men and women. From royalty to the gods, famous diamonds are usually often as well recognized as the people who owned them.

For hundreds of years diamonds, as well as famous diamonds, were used in the body armor of warriors and even in the crowns of our kings and queens to resemble their fearlessness.   

The Kohinoor diamond

Just one of the few oval shaped famous diamonds, the “mountain of light” was first talked about in the year 1304. It weighed an incredible 186 carats, and it is claimed that the diamond had been set in the peacock throne of Shah Jehan as an eye of one of the peacock's.


At the time of Queen Victoria's rule, the famous diamonds form was basically modified a little bit and it was recut to weigh 108. 93 carats. The diamond is at present one of the British Crown Jewels.

The Orloff diamond

At the time the Orloff diamond's discovary, it was claimed that it weighed approximately 300 carats. This specific gemstone is one of the famous diamonds and is held at the Diamond Treasury of the former Soviet Union centrally located in Moscow.


A tale about the Orloff states that the diamond was in fact placed in the eye of a god, in the temple of Sri Rangen, which is exactly how it became recognized as one of the world's famous diamonds.

The Regent

Prior to this unbelievably big diamond of the famous diamonds was cut it weighed 410 carats! Initially called “The Pitt”, after the English Prime Minister, William Pitt, it had been cut into a circular shape and comprised of much more than 140 carats.

In 1717, the diamond ended up being bought by the Duke of Orleans, Regent of France. It was after that that the diamond had been renamed “The Regent”. When Louis XV had his coronation, the jewel was set into his crown.

Once the French Revolution ended, “The Regent” was actually owned by Napoleon Bonaparte, and was positioned in the hilt of Bonaparte's sword.

At the moment, the diamond is on show for every one to appreciate in the Louvre.

The Blue Hope

The most well recognized of all famous diamonds, the Blue Hope is at present in the Smithsonian Institution proudly located in the state of Washington. It was possessed by Louis XIV, and at the time was known as “the blue diamond of the crown”.


At some point during the French Revolution, the Blue Hope diamond was thieved. It was eventually found in London in the year 1830, where it was later bought by Henry Philip Hope. The blue hope diamond got it's name coming from this person, as well as it's status for causing bad luck to those who possessed it. While Henry Philip Hope owned the valuable blue diamond, each of his family  members perished in extreme poverty.


Carrying on with with the bad luck, a later owner of the Blue Hope, Mr. Edward McLean in addition lost numerous family members to poverty while he possessed the diamond.
